Slavery still exists

‘Is enough being done about people taking liberties,’ asks spoken-word poet, Dai Woolridge, in this powerful piece about modern slavery and human trafficking. And the answer is no.

‘Slavery still exists,’ a spoken word by Dai Woolridge.

This piece has been specially commissioned by the Coalition to Stop Slavery to mark Anti-Slavery Day 2023. Ella’s is a proud founding member of this coalition. Here’s what else we’re doing together, this Winter…

Making the UK a hostile environment for traffickers

Did you know that human trafficking and other forms of modern slavery are currently a low-risk, high-reward enterprise for criminals?

Of all the traffickers that get arrested, only 23 per cent are successfully prosecuted.

And if a trafficker is actually convicted, they stand a good chance of a lenient sentence or even walking free.

The Coalition to Stop Slavery is calling on the Government to make the UK a hostile environment for traffickers, not the victims of trafficking. We’re calling for our leaders to:

  • urgently address the appalling conviction rate for modern slavery offences, which should include moves to…

  • improve sentencing guidelines and training for judges so that perpetrators receive sentences that reflect the seriousness of their crimes.

In late 2023, The Coalition to Stop Slavery is convening a group of anti-slavery and legal experts who can make specific recommendations.

You can help by following the coalition on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram and put pressure on the Government at the right time. You’ll also find Dai’s spoken word on these channels: please share far and wide to increase public awareness of the tragic, important, undisputable fact that slavery still exists.

Let’s make the UK a hostile environment for traffickers, not the victims of trafficking.
